Phillies place Garcia on DL, sign Mesa

The Phillies placed righthander Freddy Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain, Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced today. To fill his spot on the roster, the team has signed reliever Jose Mesa to a major league contract.

Mesa, the Phillies' all-time saves leader, began the season with Detroit and went 1-1 with a 12.46 ERA in 16 games. Ten of his 16 appearances were scoreless. Last season, the righthander was 1-5 with one save and a 3.86 ERA in 79 games for Colorado.

"Jose will add some experience to a generally young bullpen," said Amaro. "After seeing him in a recent workout we feel he will add some depth to the middle of our pen."

A two-time American League All-Star (1995-96), Mesa spent three seasons with the Phillies (2001-03) and went 12-16 with a 3.77 ERA in 206 relief appearances with the team. He set a club record with 111 saves, including back-to-back 40-save seasons in 2001 and 2002.

Mesa, 41, ranks fifth among active pitchers with 320 saves, behind Trevor Hoffman (500), Mariano Rivera (420), Billy Wagner (337) and Roberto Hernandez (326). He's had four 40-save seasons in his career.

In 19 major league seasons, Mesa has a combined record of 79-107 with 320 saves and a 4.33 ERA in 982 games (95 starts) for Baltimore (1987-92), Cleveland (1992-98), San Francisco (1998), Seattle (1999-2000), Philadelphia (2001-03), Pittsburgh (2004-05), Colorado (2006) and Detroit (2007). In his 887 career relief appearances, he has a 3.89 ERA.
