The D-backs' Trevor Cahill and the Giants' Ryan Vogelsong will square off for the second time in a week Thursday. Cahill will attempt to keep the D-backs' hopes alive for a possible National League Wild Card spot, as they travel to San Francisco for a four-game set.
Cahill and Vogelsong each allowed three runs in the no-decision at Chase Field, which Arizona won on a walk-off hit in the ninth. Vogelsong went six innings, while Cahill lasted 6 1/3 innings. Cahill is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts against the Giants this season, all at Chase Field. He's 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA in three career starts at AT&T Park.
Vogelsong has a 4.85 ERA in two no-decision starts against Arizona this season. He's 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 15 career appearances (nine starts) against the D-backs. He went 1-0 with a 2.93 ERA in five August starts, allowing 10 runs in 30 2/3 innings.
The D-backs are 5-10 this season against the Giants, who sit 15 games below .500. Arizona defeated the Blue Jays in 10 innings Wednesday to draw within 7 1/2 games of the final Wild Card spot behind the Reds. It will remain a tough task to manage to get into the postseason for the D-backs, who are 15-13 in their last 28 games. Arizona will somehow have to leapfrog the Reds and the Nationals, who are a half-game ahead of Arizona.
The Giants will return home after a nine-game road trip against NL West teams. They finished 4-5 on the trip against the D-backs, Padres and Rockies. San Francisco had a rare offensive outburst Wednesday in a 13-5 win over the Padres. It's just the second time after the All-Star break the Giants have piled on 10 or more runs. The Giants went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position in that game despite a .229 average with runners in their previous 15 contests.
"The ironic part of it is we were two different teams this year," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Early, we were getting those hits, we were making those comebacks and getting these runs in. Then it went the other way."
Giants: Posey out Wednesday
Buster Posey did not play against the Padres due to a bruised right ring finger and torn fingernail. He suffered the injury Tuesday when he was hit in the throwing hand trying to block a pitch in the dirt. Bochy is hopeful Posey will return Thursday.
D-backs: Prado named NL Player of the Month
Martin Prado won his first career NL Player of the Month award for his performance in August. The third baseman led the league with 30 RBIs last month as he hit .375 with four home runs and 11 walks in 28 games. Prado set the franchise record for most RBIs in August.
• Prado's 10-game hitting streak was snapped Wednesday. It was the second-longest active streak in the Majors.
• The D-backs have had 13 walk-off wins this season.
• The Giants have won 17 of their last 21 games when they've scored at least four runs. They're 48-15 in such games this season.
