Phillies focus on signing picks
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com

Cole Hamels is the first left-handed pitcher chosen first by the Phillies since 1988. (Baseball America)
PHILADELPHIA -- Maybe now Marti Wolever can get some sleep.

"I'd like to," said the Phillies Director of Scouting, after participating in 50 rounds of the First-Year Player Draft, spread out over Tuesday and Wednesday. "Now we have to try to sign these guys."

That process can begin early next week, when Wolever plans to travel to San Diego to meet with first-round pick Cole Hamels. While there, he hopes to also meet Jake Blalock -- Hamels high school teammate and younger brother of Texas prospect Hank Blalock -- and Kiel Fisher, a third-round pick also from California.

Wolever said he expects most of the later picks to sign in time for a mini camp that begins June 9 at the team's complex in Clearwater, Fla.

With Hamels, Wolever seems optimistic, especially after the news that high school right-hander Chris Gruler agreed to terms with the Cincinnati Reds. Gruler, taken third overall, received a $2.5 million signing bonus.

Hamels is represented by advisor John Boggs, who handled Tony Gwynn and Mark Prior, last year's second overall pick by the Chicago Cubs.

"I'm optimistic," Wolever said.

While content with the overall mix of talent the Phillies selected, Wolever would have liked to have added a few more left-handed arms, who seemingly were drafted just ahead of when the Phillies were ready to pounce.

"Never before had I had my pocket picked like that," he said. "Luckily, we had guys who we liked just as much who we took. I'm a firm believer that you can never have too much pitching."
