PHILADEPHIA -- Jon Lieber's Major League career began in this city more than a decade ago, so he figured he might as well come back.

On Wednesday, he did, agreeing to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Phillies, assuming the likely role as ace and Opening Day starter, something he's done five times in his career. His arrival is the final significant need identified by general manager Ed Wade.

"My wife and I were talking about this the other night, and how weird it was to possibly end your career where it started," said Lieber. "Obviously, it was a different stadium, but to be back in Philadelphia is pretty cool."

The 34-year-old righty will receive a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $5.25 million for 2005, $7.25 million for 2006 and $7.5 million for 2007. He earned $3.5 million last season with the Yankees.
