PHILADELPHIA -- Surgery appears to be the operative word for the Phillies this offseason, as Pat Burrell and Kenny Lofton each had underwent minor procedures over the weekend.
Burrell had surgery Saturday on his right foot to remove a loose body and bone spur. Dr. Mike Myerson did the work at The Institute for Foot & Ankle Reconstruction: Mercy Hospital in Baltimore.
If Burrell, 29, had any soreness during the season, it didn't affect his performance. The left fielder hit .281 with 32 homers and a career-high 117 RBIs. His RBI total tied for second in the National League, the second time he finished among the top three in the past four years (2002).
He had some discomfort in his wrist at times, but nothing serious, and played in 154 games. He provided the right-handed thunder to the middle of the order, often batting between Bobby Abreu and Ryan Howard.
Lofton had his left knee debrided on Friday, by Dr. Lewis Yocum, the Angels team doctor.
The 38-year-old had a fine season for the Phillies, batting .335 with 67 runs scored in 110 games. He served as the left-handed half of a center-field platoon with Jason Michaels. Lofton is a potential free agent.
Both players are expected to be ready by Spring Training.
