PHILADELPHIA -- One day after losing free agent Billy Wagner to the Mets, the Phillies added a relief pitcher.

However, it wasn't Tom Gordon, Trevor Hoffman or Bob Wickman.

The Phillies signed free agent right-handed reliever Julio Santana to a one-year, $800,000 contract on Wednesday. The deal also includes performance bonuses. Santana passed a physical late Tuesday afternoon, which was the final obstacle in completing the deal.

Santana, 31, began the 2005 season with Triple-A Nashville, where he was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in eight games. On April 29, the Brewers purchased his contract and he proceeded to go 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 41 games -- all in relief. He picked up his first Major League save on June 1 at San Diego.

In 42 innings for Milwaukee, Santana gave up 34 hits, walked 19 and struck out 49. Opponents hit .221 against him.

"Santana did a solid job in Milwaukee's bullpen and he gives us some more options there," Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said in a statement released by the club.

Before signing with the Brewers, Santana pitched for the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese League. In 29 games with the Giants, he was 2-2 with a 1.89 ERA.

Santana has also pitched for Texas (1997-98), Tampa Bay (1998-99), Montreal (2000) and Detroit (2002).

Santana was a member of the Phillies' Triple-A club in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2003, where he was 1-1 with a 3.64 ERA in 19 games.

The Phillies' 40-man roster now stands at 38 players.
