PHILADELPHIA -- A familiar voice returned to the Phillies' broadcasting team, when the team announced the return of Tom McCarthy.

McCarthy worked for the Phillies from 2001-05 before spending the past two seasons as a play-by-play announcer for the National League rival New York Mets on WFAN. He signed a five-year deal to return to Philadelphia, announced Rob Brooks, manager, broadcasting on Tuesday.

"We are thrilled that we can bring him back to work on our telecasts," Brooks said in a statement, adding that McCarthy will do play-by-play for three innings when Hall of Famer Harry Kalas isn't on television.

Kalas still will provide play-by-play for six innings on TV and do the fourth inning on radio.

Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Chris Wheeler, Gary Matthews and Jim Jackson all will return for the 2008 season.

McCarthy also has served as the play-by-play announcer for the Double-A Trenton Thunder for six seasons. He also broadcasts Princeton University football and basketball, Rutgers University football and St. Joseph's University women's basketball. He's currently doing St. Joseph's University men's basketball.

Team strength: The Phillies named Dong Lien as their new Major League strength and conditioning coordinator. Lien replaces Scott Hoffman, who did not have his contract renewed following the 2007 season. Lien spent the last three seasons in the Phils' Minor League system, most recently as the Minor League strength and conditioning coordinator.

Philling in: Randy Wolf may be returning to Philadelphia, as the Phillies remain in serious talks on a one-year deal. ... The chance of acquiring Japanese right-hander Hiroki Kuroda is becoming less likely. The Mariners and D-backs also are in the mix, and Seattle is Kuroda's preferred destination. ... Phillies general manager Pat Gillick conceded Monday that center fielder Torii Hunter's five-year, $90 million contract with the Angels could affect negotiations with Aaron Rowand. Rowand is believed to be seeking a pact in the five-year, $70 million range. Is that out of the Phillies' range? "I wouldn't say it pushes him out of our range," Gillick said, "but it pushes the market up." ... The Phillies spoke with Scott Boras last week about a potential deal for Kyle Lohse, and they were told the pitcher is seeking a five-year contract.
