PHILADELPHIA -- Bill Cash was the type of player who prided himself on always being "ready."

"When I put on this uniform," Cash said, "I'm ready to play. And I'm ready to play to win."

That statement earned the former Philadelphia Stars catcher the nickname "Ready." On Thursday, the Phillies held a pregame ceremony to honor Cash and another member of the 1940s Philadelphia Stars, Stanley Glenn, by choosing them as ceremonial Draft picks. Like Cash, Glenn was also a catcher during his playing days.

Cash and Glenn are two of the four living members of the Stars. The other members, Harold Gould and Mahlon Duckett, were in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on Thursday to take part in Major League Baseball's 2008 ceremonial Negro Leagues Draft.

Prior to the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, each of the 30 big league clubs honored those who played in the Negro Leagues by selecting a player who never had the chance to dress in a Major League uniform.

Negro League players who signed with Major League organizations are not eligible for Thursday's ceremonial Draft. Cash played in the White Sox's organization, while Glenn played in the Boston Braves' system.

However, the Phillies felt it was important to recognize the two players. Each was presented with a new Phillies jersey.

"I would hope that, in some kind of way, we can get back to where we came from," Glenn said during Thursday's ceremony, "and appreciate the game for what it is."
