On Friday, the Phillies avoided arbitration with Greg Dobbs -- one of eight Phillies players who filed prior to Thursday's deadline -- by settling on a two-year, $2.5 million contract, assistant general manager Scott Proefrock announced via press release.
Dobbs, 30, hit .301 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 128 games last season, batting .355 as a pinch-hitter. His 22 pinch-hits in 2008 led the Major Leagues and set a Phillies single-season record.
The left-handed-hitting Dobbs, signed as an amateur free agent by the Mariners in 2001, made $440,000 in 2008 -- his fifth season in the Major Leagues, and second with the Phillies -- and saw action mostly at third base.
"Over the past two seasons, Greg has been one of the best pinch-hitters in the game and has also contributed significantly as a third baseman," Proefrock said in the release.
Still left on the long list of arbitration-eligible players for the Phillies are Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Jayson Werth, Ryan Madson, Joe Blanton, Chad Durbin and Shane Victorino. Figures between the clubs and their potential arbitration cases will be exchanged on Tuesday, with hearings being scheduled at any point between Feb. 1-21.
