Phillies likely standing pat for now
'Nothing imminent' in terms of adding hitter to bench
DENVER -- The Phillies tried to convince Gary Sheffield that Philadelphia would be a great place to play in 2009.
Sheffield signed with the Mets instead.
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said at the time the possibility remained the team could sign another right-handed bat to improve its bench. But that possibility sounds slim for the foreseeable future, meaning when everybody is healthy, the Phillies' five-man bench consists of Greg Dobbs, Matt Stairs, Eric Bruntlett, Chris Coste and Miguel Cairo.
"We're always looking to improve, but nothing is imminent," Amaro said.
