Ruiz nearing return to action
Catcher set to begin rehab assignment Saturday
PHILADELPHIA -- Carlos Ruiz is getting closer to returning behind the plate for the Phillies.
Ruiz, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 10 with a strained right oblique, will begin a rehabilitation assignment Saturday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ruiz is eligible to be activated Sunday, although Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said it is unlikely Ruiz will be activated then.
But Ruiz has made progress. He is hitting, throwing and catching without symptoms of the injury. If he continues to make progress, it should not be long before he is back on the 25-man roster.
Zagurski activated, optioned: Left-hander Mike Zagurski has been activated from the DL and optioned to Class A Clearwater. Zagurski is recovering from Tommy John ligament reconstruction surgery, which he had on April 3.
