MLB Network to air special Eddie Gaedel segment on Monday, August 31

Bob Costas to voice MLB Network Remembers segment on famous stunt in baseball history

08/28/09 1:39 PM ET

MLB Network will air on Monday, August 31 MLB Network Remembers: The Eddie Gaedel Story, narrated by Bob Costas about 3'7" 65-lb Eddie Gaedel's at-bat stunt between the Browns and Tigers for an MLB game in St. Louis in 1951. After Browns owner Bill Veeck concocted the idea to boost attendance, St. Louis manager Zach Taylor sent Gaedel, a stunt performer, to the plate to pinch hit for Frank Saucier. Veeck had instructed the diminutive Brownie to crouch low and to not swing his toy-like bat.

The piece includes original interviews with former St. Louis Browns outfielder Roy Sievers, former St. Louis Browns batboy Fred Buchholz, Gaedel's nephew Bob Gaedel and St. Louis Browns Historian Bill Borst.

The piece will first air between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. ET and re-air throughout the night on MLB Tonight.

This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
