PHILADELPHIA -- In their second move since Major League rosters expanded, the Phillies summoned veteran Paul Hoover from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to be their third catcher.

They selected his contract Thursday and, to make room on the 40-man roster, designated 23-year-old catcher Joel Naughton for assignment.

"Obviously this team is one of the better teams in baseball," Hoover said. "I don't expect to get in the lineup. If I do, you know, I'll be happy and try to take advantage of it."

His best chance may be as a pinch-hitter versus lefties. The right-handed-hitting Hoover batted .344 with six doubles and one homer against them this season. Over a 13-year professional career, he has eked out just 28 big league games. There, too, he's hit .385 (10-for-26) against lefties and .146 (7-for-48) against righties.

Hoover was on the Marlins' Opening Day roster last season, hitting .200 (8-for-40) over a career-high 13 games.

The 33-year-old -- who has made 1,063 lifetime Minor League appearances -- spent most of this year backing up IronPigs starter Lou Marston, until Marston was dealt to the Indians in the Cliff Lee trade. Hoover hit .253 with 28 RBIs in 73 games.

"It's tough," Hoover said. "You're getting older, and you want to play so you can show people that you can get back to the top."

Now, even if he doesn't play much, he's back at the top. He won't be in Philadelphia long, but he's hoping to get a World Series ring for his service.

"Sure, how could you not?" he said. "What an awesome opportunity to get a chance to come up here and get a chance to be part of something special."

The Phillies made another move Thursday, activating left-hander Antonio Bastardo from the 60-day disabled list and optioning him to Double-A Reading. Bastardo went 2-3 with a 6.75 ERA in five starts for the Phillies before straining his left shoulder in June. To clear space on the 40-man roster, they designated 26-year-old righty Stephen Register for assignment.

Right-handed reliever Clay Condrey, who has been on the disabled list since July 23 with a strained left oblique, will pitch for Lehigh Valley in a rehab outing Saturday.
