Brother of Phillies' Lopes dies in fire
Coach takes indefinite leave of absence from team
WASHINGTON -- Davey Lopes' brother, Michael, died after a Friday night house fire in Providence, R.I.
The Providence Journal reported that Lopes' mother and sister were in the house at the time, but escaped without injury.
The fire department has not determined the cause of the fire, but it apparently started in the basement. Firemen found Michael, a longshoreman for the Port of Providence, in the basement.
Davey has left the team indefinitely to be with family, the Phillies said Sunday morning. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said hitting coach Milt Thompson will coach first base until Lopes' return.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Davey and his family at this difficult time," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement. "We hope to have Davey back with us on the field real soon."
