PHILADELPHIA -- Cliff Lee gained folk-hero status when he spurned the Yankees and Rangers to re-sign with the Phillies.
Fans have shown their appreciation with their wallets.
The fourth-best-selling Phillies item at MLB.com in 2010 was Lee's replica home jersey, which is noteworthy because Lee rejoined the Phillies in December. Of the top-10 selling jerseys and T-shirts at MLB.com last year, only Lee and Roy Halladay were ranked. The authentic Halladay home jersey ranked third and the Halladay replica home jersey ranked fifth. (The other top items were mostly personalized jerseys.)
The top-selling item at Citizens Bank Park's Majestic Clubhouse Store since mid-December? An adult Phillies T-shirt with Lee's name and number on the back. The third-best-selling item? The youth-sized Lee T-shirt. No other Phillies T-shirt cracked the top 20.
The other top-five-selling items were the Phillies' charity cookbook, which ranked second; the 2010 season DVD "Great Expectations," which ranked fourth; and hold onto your hats for the fifth-best-selling item over the past several weeks -- Phillies lip balm.
Must be some lip balm.
Phillies director of merchandising Scott Brandreth said prior to Christmas that sales were up 100 percent from the previous year. No doubt that has plenty to do with the acquisition of Lee, who could give the Phillies the best rotation in baseball in recent memory. Brandreth said the adult Lee T-shirt has overwhelmingly outsold every other T-shirt, including the Lee youth T-shirt.
