Danks set to go Wednesday following rainout
Lefty's matchup with Verlander pushed back a day; Rienzo to be skipped
CHICAGO -- More than two hours before the scheduled start of Tuesday's White Sox-Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field, White Sox manager Robin Ventura was asked if he believed the game would be played.
"I don't know," he said. "You start checking weather. Every time we think we're going to get one in, we might not. And when you don't think you're going to get on in, you do.
"It doesn't look good. But I'm not a weather man."
His forecast, though, was accurate. The game was called about a half-hour later and the White Sox had their first rainout of the season.
No makeup date has been scheduled.
The Tigers return to Chicago for a weekend series from August 29-31. There's no common day off around that series, so a doubleheader is likely.
The rainout also resulted in a couple of back-to-back attractive pitching matchups. Both scheduled starters on Tuesday -- John Danks of the White Sox and Justin Verlander of Tigers -- will go Wednesday.
Both starters originally scheduled to pitch Wednesday -- Detroit's Drew Smyly and Andre Rienzo of the White Sox -- will be skipped, and Thursday's matchup of Chris Sale and Max Scherzer will go off as scheduled.
