Q&A with first-round pick Tony Sanchez
Pittsburgh's new catcher chats about improving his game and what to expect from him
Can you explain your emotions on getting picked forth overall?
It's unbelievable, and it's an honor to be picked by the Pirates. I could barely breathe watching TV because I was so nervous, but it's unbelievable for me and my family and everyone involved -- my teammates and coaches. I am so fortunate to be taken at that spot and I'm excited to get out there and start playing.
It seemed inconceivable back at the start of the season that you would be the fourth overall pick. Can you describe how things went from that point to where you are now?
I definitely had no idea that I would be in consideration for the fourth pick (at the beginning of the year). I guess it does show that hard work pays off and good things happen to good people. I like to think that I have a good head on my shoulders and I make the right decisions on and off the field. I knew I could help a team and a franchise out with my tools behind the plate, and I'm happy I'm going to Pittsburgh and I can't wait to start.
What things do you need to work on?
I definitely need to work on my pitch-calling; I need to get with the coaches and work with them on getting better at calling a game. I need to work on learning hitting patterns and going over film, but the most important thing is working with players and coaches that have a lot more experience than I do.
Is it important to you to get signed early and to get into the system as soon as possible?
Absolutely. That is one of my biggest priorities right now. I want to get out there and start playing as soon as I can. The quicker I get out there, the better it is for me as far as learning, getting to know the pitchers and developing relationships with my teammates and coaches.
How would you describe to the Pirates fans what they should expect from Tony Sanchez?
I am a guy that is very dedicated to my work ethic and I invest a lot in my team. I am going to work harder for my teammates than I am for myself. I'm going to play my best and work my hardest to get to where I want to be and help turn this franchise into a winning franchise.
