VOTING FOR VICTORINO
-Yesterday, the campaign kicked off in South Philadelphia with Mayor Michael Nutter accompanying Victorino in a true grassroots effort -- knocking on doors and visiting a local McDonald¡¦s to ask Philadelphians to vote.
-The political leaders of Pennsylvania and Hawaii have joined the cause: Governor Edward G. Rendell and Governor Linda Lingle made a friendly wager on which state can cast the most votes. Playing off Victorino¡¦s team number, the losing governor will send a taste of that state¡¦s local flavor to the winning governor: either eight cases of pineapples or cheesesteaks.
-CBS sports radio station WIP has teamed up with the Phillies to engage passionate Victorino fans in a marathon voting session. Beginning at noon today, July 7, three pre-selected fans have convened at the ballpark to out-vote one another. The winner will receive a special meet-and-greet with Victorino during batting practice and four tickets to a Phillies game.
-Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy will join the Phillies Ballgirls to hand out ¡§Vote for Victorino¡¨ cards and Hawaiian leis to Center City workers on their lunch breaks this week.
-Even local businesses are getting in on the action. ¡§Vote for Victorino¡¨ cards will be distributed at select McDonald¡¦s and Modell¡¦s Sporting Goods stores. The cards will also be distributed by W.B. Mason drivers across the city.
-Brandywine Realty Trust will illuminate the Cira Centre with Shane¡¦s #8 through Thursday.
-Traditional methods such as advertising, billboards and email are also being used to get the word out, as well as postings on Facebook and Twitter.com.
Victorino, who is often characterized as a sparkplug for the Phillies lineup, is currently batting over .300. If selected, it will be his first trip to an All-Star Game. Victorino currently trails the Giants¡¦ Pablo Sandoval in online votes. Other roster candidates include Cristian Guzman of the Washington Nationals; Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers; and Mark Reynolds of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game in St. Louis will be televised nationally on Tuesday, July 14, by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International, with pregame ceremonies beginning at 8:00 p.m. (EDT)/7:00 p.m. (CDT).
