Right-hander Pedro Martinez is scheduled to make his first major league appearance of the season on Wednesday, August 12, in a start against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Manager Charlie Manuel announced today.

Martinez, 37, was signed by the Phillies on July 15 and placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right shoulder strain. In three rehabilitation appearances in the Phillies' minor league system, he went 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA (7 ER, 12.1 IP) and 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched (11.7 SO/9.0 IP).

A three-time Cy Young Award winner, Martinez has not appeared in a major league game since September 25, 2008, against the Cubs at Shea Stadium. To make room for Martinez in the rotation, left-hander Jamie Moyer was informed today that he will be moved to the bullpen. The Phillies will announce a roster move to accommodate Martinez on the 25-man roster prior to Wednesday's game.

"Based on our reports on how Pedro has pitched in his rehab starts, we felt it was time to move him into our rotation," Manuel said. "Jamie was a total professional and team player when we let him know of the decision to move him to the bullpen. He has been and will continue to be a very important part of this team."

Left-hander J.A. Happ will start for the Phillies tomorrow at Wrigley Field and left-hander Cliff Lee in the series finale on Thursday afternoon.

In other news, the Phillies activated right-hander Chad Durbin from the 15-day DL. Durbin had been placed on the DL on July 23 with a right latissimus dorsi strain and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in two rehabilitation appearances. He is 1-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 42 appearances for the Phillies this year. To make room for Durbin on the 25-man roster, right-hander Rodrigo Lopez was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
