MLB, PEOPLE magazine & Phillies announce 30 "All-Stars Among Us" after 1.7 million votes are cast
Marci Schankweiler to be honored at the 2010 All-Star Game on FOX and featured in special pre-game ceremony July 13th at Angels Stadium
Major League Baseball, PEOPLE and the Phillies today announced Marci Schankweiler as the Phillies "All-Star" of the "All-Stars Among Us" campaign, which debuted in 2009 and recognizes individuals who are serving their communities in extraordinary ways. Out of the three "All-Star" finalists representing the Phillies, Marci Schankweiler from North Wales, Pa. has been chosen by fans across the nation for her community service through Crossing the Finish Line, an organization that sends young adult cancer patients and their families on all-expense paid respite vacations. Marci founded Crossing the Finish Line after her husband died of testicular cancer, and in 10 years the organization has benefited more than 800 cancer patients and 3,000 caregivers. Patients and families credit Marci for giving them renewed energy to battle the disease.
Marci, plus the other 29 "All-Stars Among Us," one representing each MLB Club, will attend and be honored during the pre-game ceremony of the 81st Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 13 on FOX beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT (8:00 p.m. ET).
Fans across the nation cast 1.7 million votes - more than double the amount of votes from the previous year - at PeopleAllStars.com to select the 30 "All-Stars Among Us" winners out of the pool of 90 finalists who are serving as leaders within their communities.
"I am so excited to be chosen as this year's Phillies People All-Star, and will wear that Phillies jersey proudly in Anaheim," said Marci. "It is an honor and a privilege to be selected, as well as it has been an honor and a privilege to help those whose lives have been affected by cancer. My late husband would have been so proud, and I hope to continue the dream of making Crossing the Finish Line available nationwide."
