Lehigh Valley Wins Phillies Baseball Carpenter Cup Championship

The 26th annual Phillies Baseball Carpenter Cup - recognized nationally as one of the finest baseball tournaments for high school students - officially came to an end after Lehigh Valley beat Burlington County 5-3 in the championship game held earlier today at Citizens Bank Park.

This is the third time Lehigh Valley has won the championship title, also winning in 2001 and 1998. The franchise has played in the tournament since 1993, and has had many star players on its roster including Carpenter Cup alumnus and Phillies catcher Brian Schneider.

In addition to Citizens Bank Park, the tournament included play at FDR Park and for the first time, Coca-Cola Park, home of the Phillies AAA team Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Each year, more than 400 high school students take part in this 15-game tournament, where they have the chance to compete in front of major league scouts and nearly 100 college coaches. The Carpenter Cup is also a catalyst for many players to receive scholarships or admission to some of the country's finest universities.
