Mercer County, playing out of the losers' bracket, won three games in a row earlier today to claim the 7th annual Phillies Softball Carpenter Cup title. The all-star women's high school team defeated Lehigh Valley, 6-1, in the first game of the day and then beat the winners' bracket SOL American & Continental 3-0, forcing a decisive third game. Mercer County took the final game 4-3, and with it the championship trophy.

A total of 16 franchises competed in the four-day, 31-game, double-elimination tournament, held at FDR Park in South Philadelphia.

Each year, more than 250 high school softball players take part in this tournament, where they have the chance to compete in front of college coaches. The Phillies Softball Carpenter Cup is also a catalyst for many players to receive scholarships or admission to some of the country's finest universities.
