Alfonseca fares well in winter ball

Veteran righty reliever looks sharp during regular season

Antonio Alfonseca, a veteran of 10 Major League seasons, signed a one-year contract with the Phillies on Jan. 23. Prior to inking the deal, the 34-year-old right-hander pitched for the Azucareros del Este in the Dominican Winter League.

Alfonseca enjoyed a solid DWL regular season, going 1-0 with two saves and a 1.93 ERA in 9 1/3 innings. He also made seven relief appearances in the playoffs, allowing three runs over 7 1/3 frames.

Alfonseca was one of many players in the Phillies' organization who played winter ball. Here's how the others fared:

Arizona Fall League

RHP Joseph Bisenius -- Bisenius finished the AFL season with an unsightly 11.57 ERA for the Peoria Saguaros. However, he did not allow a run over his final three appearances, striking out six batters in 4 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old also appeared in 12 games for the Navegantes del Magallanes of the Venezuelan Winter League, where he went 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA.

LHP J.A. Happ -- A 24-year-old Illinois native, Happ was 1-0 with a 5.02 ERA in five appearances spanning 14 1/3 innings. Most of that action came at the Peoria Sports Complex, the Saguaros' home park.

C Jason Jaramillo -- Jaramillo emerged as the AFL's best-hitting backstop, going 25-for-66 (.379) with eight doubles, two home runs, 17 RBIs, 14 runs scored and nine walks in 17 games.

RHP Chris Key -- A late addition to the Saguaros' roster, Key made six appearances and allowed eight runs over 10 2/3 innings. At 29, he was the oldest player in the AFL this season.

RHP Kyle Kendrick -- Kendrick earned his second victory in as many decisions after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the Saguaros' season finale. The 22-year-old yielded eight runs over 10 2/3 innings on the season, while opponents batted .362 against him.

RHP Zack Segovia -- Segovia made six relief appearances for the Saguaros and gave up just one run over 9 2/3 innings.

Dominican Winter League

LHP Eude Brito -- Brito excelled as a member of the Azucareros del Este, going 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA in 13 relief appearances totaling 18 2/3 innings.

LHP Fabio Castro -- Castro's 1-2 record with the Gigantes del Cibao was deceiving. The 22-year-old southpaw recorded a 1.86 ERA and struck out 31 batters in 29 innings.

RHP Alexander Concepcion -- Concepcion made one appearance for the Gigantes, allowing one run over 1 2/3 innings.

RHP Julio De La Cruz -- De La Cruz went 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA in seven games for the Gigantes.

RHP Maximiliano De La Cruz -- De La Cruz made two relief appearances for the Leones del Escogido and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

RHP Anderson Garcia -- The Estrellas Orientales right-hander made three relief appearances and yielded one run over two innings for a 4.50 ERA.

IF Abraham Nunez -- The veteran reserve infielder appeared in 23 games for the Leones and hit .268 over 71 at-bats.

C Carlos Ruiz -- Ruiz hit .309 with a team-leading 13 RBIs in the semifinal round of the DWL playoffs, helping the Tigres del Licey reach the finals against the Aguilas Cibaenas. Ruiz went just 4-for-24 in the championship series as the Tigres went down to defeat.

RHP Alfredo Simon -- A Rule 5 Draft acquisition, Simon was 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA for the Gigantes del Cibao. He tossed 31 1/3 innings over seven appearances.

1B Juan Tejeda -- Tejeda collected two hits over 17 at-bats as a member of the Leones del Escogido.

RHP Jim Ed Warden -- Another Rule 5 Draft pick-up, Warden pitched for the Aguilas Cibaenas in the regular season and compiled a 4.15 ERA in 15 relief appearances totaling only 8 2/3 innings.

Mexican Pacific League

OF Chris Roberson -- After hitting .277 in 58 regular-season contests with the league champion Naranjeros de Hermosillo, Roberson really came alive in the playoffs. The 27-year-old hit .333 and scored 18 runs in 16 postseason contests.

Venezuelan Winter League

RHP Ryan Cameron -- Cameron made 11 regular-season relief appearances for the Navegantes del Magallanes and went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA over 18 2/3 innings.

LHP Sergio Escalona -- Escalona appeared in only two games for the Cardenales and allowed four runs over three innings.

RHP Jeff Farnsworth -- A workhorse reliever, Farnsworth went 4-2 with a 2.51 ERA and seven saves in 26 outings with the Pastora de los Llanos.

C Orlando Guevara -- Guevara, a 23-year-old backstop, appeared in one playoff game for the Aguilas del Zulia and went hitless in three at-bats. He played four regular-season games and was just 2-for-13.

SS Fidel Hernandez -- Hernandez went 2-for-4 in five games for the Aguilas del Zulia.

2B Carlos Leon -- Also a member of the Aguilas, Leon was used sparingly in the postseason. The 27-year-old infielder appeared in seven of the club's 16 playoff games and hit .294 (5-for-17) with a double and two runs scored. He batted .217 (23-for-106) during the regular season.

LHP Brian Mazone -- Mazone made five regular-season starts for the Navegantes del Magallanes and went 1-2 with an 8.62 ERA over 15 2/3 innings.

RHP Tim McClaskey -- The 31-year-old started five playoff games for the Navegantes and went 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA over 23 1/3 innings. He was 4-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 12 regular-season starts.

LHP Moises Melendez -- Melendez made four playoff appearances for the Aguilas del Zulia and allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings. He went 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 12 regular-season outings, including seven starts.

IF Peeter Ramos -- Ramos appeared in just four of the Leones del Caracas' 16 playoff games and went 1-for-11. He collected one hit in five at-bats over five regular-season contests.

RHP Mauricio Romero -- Romero made his only appearance for the Aguilas del Zulia on Dec. 27 and tossed a scoreless inning.

RF Jim Rushford -- The 32-year-old made his VWL debut on Dec. 1 with the Pastora de los Llanos and went on to hit .306 (11-for-36) in 14 games.

2B Danny Sandoval -- Sandoval batted .244 with three home runs and 22 RBIs in 197 at-bats with the Pastora de los Llanos.

1B Randall Simon -- A solid performer for the Tiburones de La Guaira, Simon hit .331 with 27 runs scored and 27 RBIs in 166 at-bats.
