Report: Phillies sign Mesa

Right-hander is Philadelphia's all-time save leader

KANSAS CITY -- Jose Mesa, the Phillies' all-time save leader, apparently is returning to the Philadelphia bullpen.

FOXSports.com reported it had learned Mesa has signed with the Phillies, although the club refused to confirm it on Friday. Mesa was released by the Tigers on Sunday after going 1-1 with a 12.34 ERA in 16 games.

Mesa, who is 41 and has pitched 19 years in the Major Leagues, logged 111 saves with the Phillies from 2001-03. He has a career record of 107-95 with 320 saves and a 4.33 ERA.

Mesa is expected to join the club this weekend in Kansas City.

Philadelphia was one of the teams most interested in Troy Percival, who inked a Minor League deal with the Cardinals on Friday.
