Savery, Phils reportedly agree to terms

Official announcement expected to be made Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA -- Joe Savery has agreed to contract terms with the Phillies, a baseball source said Sunday.

An official announcement is expected to be made following Savery's scheduled physical Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sunday that Savery had signed for $1.37 million and is expected to report to Class A Williamsport by the end of the week.

Savery, a slugger at Rice who also started a number of games as a pitcher, will turn to pitching full-time once with the Phillies. The left-hander was 10-1 during his junior season with a 2.78 ERA.

"I really believe that either by late next year or Opening Day of 2009 [I'll be in the big leagues]," Savery said after he was drafted 19th overall. "The bottom line is I've never focused on pitching. I relied on athleticism. I'm really excited about the opportunity to focus on pitching and being around professional instruction."
