Groin injury sidelines Barajas

Phillies backstop placed on 15-day disabled list

MILWAUKEE -- The Phillies were hit with another injury this road trip, placing catcher Rod Barajas on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

Barajas has played sparingly this season, after starting the year sharing the backup position with Carlos Ruiz. He's played in 43 games this season, hitting .214 with seven doubles, four homers and nine RBIs. The backstop hit a season-low .188 in six July appearances, and hadn't played in a game since July 28.

He has since been passed on the depth chart by Chris Coste.

"This isn't the way you'd script it going into the season," said Barajas, who signed a one-year, $3 million contract in the offseason. "I'm just going to try to get this thing feeling the way it's supposed to feel and try to see what we can do the last month of the season."

That suggests Barajas is resigned to the reality that the injury will cost him at least a month, or beyond Sept. 1, when the rosters can expand. Coste is hitting .345 and has earned playing time over Barajas and Carlos Ruiz.

Manager Charlie Manuel hinted that a move might be coming after Thursday's win over the Cubs. The manager was growing concerned with Tom Gordon's frequent days of being unavailable, and wanted to add another pitcher.

Gordon has made five appearances since being activated from the DL on July 16, but none of them within three days of each other. That, at times, has left Manuel short in the bullpen.

While helping the bullpen, the switch leaves Manuel with four bench players in games, which could offer him less flexibility in late-game situations.

Second baseman Chase Utley, first baseman Ryan Howard, right fielder Shane Victorino, outfielders Jayson Werth and Michael Bourn and pitchers Brett Myers, Gordon, Rosario, Ryan Madson (twice), Jon Lieber (twice), Freddy Garcia (twice) and Scott Mathieson have been or still are on the disabled list.

Reliever Clay Condrey, who had been designated for assignment for the fourth time this season on Tuesday, returns after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Ottawa. To make room for Condrey on the 40-man roster, right-hander Francisco Rosario was moved to the 60-day disabled list.

Barajas becomes the 13th Phillie to spend time on the Major League disabled list this season, and the fifth in the past eight days. It's the 16th DL stint by a Phillies player this season.
