Mayberry stays with Phillies as reserve
Manuel views young slugger as 'threat off the bench'
By Todd Zolecki / MLB.com
Mayberry, who the Phillies recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley after Friday night's game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, remains with the Phillies, but in a different role than this weekend, when he played in right field while Raul Ibanez served as the designated hitter. He is a role player, coming off the bench for the foreseeable future.
"I've talked briefly with [Greg] Dobbs and [Matt] Stairs, the two guys that have had a lot of success with that role," Mayberry said. "I'm just going to watch and observe and pick their brains and try to come up with a routine that works for me."
Mayberry is OK with the role. Why?
Because he's in the big leagues.
"We definitely can give John a chance," Phils manager Charlie Manuel said. "I think he's a threat coming off the bench. He's capable of hitting the ball out of the yard. If he does good, that's great. He's an athlete. We can use him on double switches. Plus, I'll try to get him some playing time."
