Brown among Phillies heading to AFL
Mathieson, Zagurski to continue comebacks in Arizona
By Todd Zolecki / MLB.com
The season begins on Oct. 13 and runs through Nov. 19, with the Rising Stars game on Nov. 7 and the championship game set for Nov. 21. Every game can be followed live on Gameday on MLB.com and MLBFallBall.com.
Brown, an outfielder, hit .303 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs in 238 at-bats with Class A Clearwater before he earned a promotion to Double-A Reading, where he has hit .318 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 88 at-bats. He is one of the players the Blue Jays demanded in a potential trade for Roy Halladay. The Phillies declined, and certainly feel good about that decision.
But there are more than just young Phillies prospects competing for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the AFL. Right-hander Scott Mathieson and left-hander Mike Zagurski also are competing. Mathieson has endured two elbow reconstruction surgeries since he pitched for the Phillies in 2006. He is pitching for Reading and throwing well. He is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in nine appearances. Zagurski is coming back from Tommy John surgery, and is 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 40 appearances for Reading.
Right-handers Michael Cisco and Michael Schwimer, catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, infielder Troy Hanzawa and outfielder Steve Susdorf will also play for the Scorpions.
