Werth reflects on dispute with fan
Outfielder says he feels bad for shouting after near-catch
By Zach Schonbrun / MLB.com
In the 12th inning of Thursday's win over Cincinnati, Werth collided with a fan reaching over to catch a foul pop by Drew Stubbs along the right-field line. Television cameras caught Werth angrily shout at the fan, who appeared to disrupt a catchable ball.
Werth said he got caught up in the heat of the moment -- considering the game was tied at 3 at the time -- and the catch would have ended the inning.
"There's been some backlash, I think," Werth said. "In the heat of the moment, and a situation that goes on, on the field, I'm definitely in a different mindset than I would be in a normal setting. I don't think I would've yelled at anybody liked that if that wasn't the case, with the game on the line."
Ruiz likely to return from DL on Saturday
PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is expected to rejoin the club on Saturday, manager Charlie Manuel said. Ruiz will play a rehab game for Class A Lakewood on Friday as the designated hitter.
Ruiz has been on the disabled list with a concussion he suffered on June 18 after being hit in the head by a broken bat by Minnesota's Jason Kubel. He has played in two Minor League rehab games so far, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI on Thursday.
"I like the two doubles," Manuel said. "RBIs are always good."
Phillies infielder Wilson Valdez was a late scratch before Friday's game due to a sore wrist. Juan Castro replaced him at second base. The Phillies currently have five players on the disabled list, including two infielders (Chase Utley and Placido Polanco).
