Phillies, Astros swap Minor Leaguers

They traded left-hander Sergio Escalona, whom they designated for assignment last week, to the Houston Astros for second baseman Albert Cartwright. The Phillies moved Escalona to make room for left-hander J.C. Romero on the 40-man roster. Cartwright is not on the 40-man roster.
Cartwright, 23, split time last season with Class A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi. He hit a combined .294 with 30 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 55 RBIs and 31 stolen bases in 127 games. He became expendable for the Astros because they have middle-infield depth in the organization.
"We liked the athleticism the guy has," Phillies director of professional scouting Mike Ondo said. "He's got some foot quickness. He has some speed. And some of our guys have seen some power out of him."
Escalona, 26, went 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA last season with Double-A Reading. He had a 4.61 ERA in 14 appearances with the Phillies in 2009.
