Thousands race at inaugural Phillies 5K

Phillies Paint the Town Red Week officially begins

It was a sea of red early this morning at Citizens Bank Park.

More than 3,000 runners lined up along Phillies Drive, ready to race in the first Phillies 5K. All were energized and more than ready to follow the Phanatic, the leadoff "runner" for the event, which benefited Phillies Charities.

Among those taking part were Ken Murtha from Worcester, Pa., and his son, Brad Murtha, from New York City. Both were runners, but it was the first time the two would ever race together.

"The second Brad found out about the Phillies 5K, he sent me an email to sign up," said Murtha.

And it was a good thing, too, because the race sold out in less than 24 hours.

"From the very beginning, fans were so excited that a Phillies 5K was coming to the ballpark," said Mary Ann Gettis, Phillies marketing initiative manager, who organized the event.

And no wonder. In addition to the race, participants were able to go onto the field for a photo finish at home plate, take part in an awards ceremony and enjoy a post-run party in Ashburn Alley.

"It really was so much fun," said Valery Heart from Wilmington, DE, a Sunday ticket holder. The Phillies 5K was the first official race for Heart, along with her husband, Charlie, and friend, Jill Rugh, from Brookhaven, Pa.

"Everybody on the sidelines cheered us on," said Heart. "It really encouraged you to keep going."

Avid runner Lynn Kanthe, 33, from Wilmington, DE, also enjoyed the race and was more than happy to place first overall among women. Now, she, along with 25 year-old Mike Zebekiewicz from Philadelphia, Pa. (the top male finisher), will be honored before the Phillies game on Tuesday, March 29.

On top of it, the duo received an autographed bat from Ryan Howard.

"I am so excited for the Phillies season!" said Kanthe, who hopes to race next year as well.
