Phillies tab Worley for Friday start vs. A's
ST. LOUIS -- Vance Worley will get the start against the A's on Friday, with Kyle Kendrick remaining in the bullpen."Now that I know I'm starting, I guess it's a little bit more relieving to know that I'll be here still," Worley said on Tuesday. Worley made a spot start on Saturday in Seattle, allowing one run on five hits in five innings in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on June 17. "I thought I battled through my problems and left runners on when I needed to," Worley said. "I thought my offspeed stuff was better; I just think I threw too many of them for balls. I didn't start them in the right spot, and when I did, I got outs with them." The right-hander was optioned to Lehigh Valley following his May 29 start to work on his consistency. He made three starts in the Minors, going 2-0 and allowing three earned runs in 19 innings with 21 strikeouts. "I know that I needed to work on a few things, and I went down there and took care of business and found my way back up," Worley said. Worley has appeared in seven games this year, starting five, and he is 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he was happy to see his old friend, Jack McKeon, managing once again for Flordia. McKeon, 80, is the second-oldest manager in Major League history."Jack just put 5 or 10 more years on my managerial career," Manuel said. Brad Lidge threw 20 pitches off the mound on Monday at the club's Spring Training facilities in Florida as he continues to rehab from a right rotator cuff strain and right elbow pain.
