Victorino in Final Vote lead; DL unlikely for now

On verge of becoming All-Star, outfielder out with thumb sprain

MIAMI -- Shane Victorino has a significantly sprained right thumb, but for the moment, a trip to the disabled list is unlikely.

That does not mean it will not happen, but the Phillies essentially made a move for Victorino on Monday when they optioned right-hander Vance Worley to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled outfielder John Mayberry Jr., leaving them with 13 healthy position players.

Victorino, who maintained his lead in the Final Vote for the final spot on the National League All-Star team Wednesday, will be evaluated again Thursday or Friday. If he is unable to play this weekend against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies could wait until next week during or just after the All-Star break to place him on the disabled list, because they can backdate it 10 days.

"I don't see him playing for a few days," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "I don't know."

Asked if he could afford to be patient with Victorino, considering they have Mayberry with the team and the All-Star break coming up, Manuel got impatient.

"We can't afford to be patient with nobody," the manager said. "We come to the ballpark and talk about winning every day. Why wouldn't we want all of our players? I can't understand that. Yeah, I want him to get well, and he doesn't have to play until he gets well. If he goes to the All-Star Game, I'm happy for him. And that's good. But that's kind of how I look at it. I didn't sign on to this job to make things easy. I signed on to win."
