Papelbon among seven to pitch on Saturday

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies have seven pitchers scheduled to pitch against the New York Yankees on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET at Bright House Field, in a game that will be broadcast on MLB.TV.

Five of them are new in camp.

Cole Hamels will start the afternoon and Mike Stutes is scheduled to finish it. In between, Dave Bush, Jonathan Papelbon, Dontrelle Willis, Raul Valdes and Chad Qualls are scheduled to pitch.

Utley, Polanco won't play in Grapefruit opener

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Phillies manager Charlie Manuel knows his lineup for the Grapefruit League opener against the Yankees on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET at Bright House Field, in a game that will be broadcast on MLB.TV.

He just didn't care to share it Friday.

But he did say Chase Utley and Placido Polanco will not play. The Phillies said at the beginning of Spring Training they would limit playing time for both in an effort to keep them healthier during the season. Utley is playing with a chronic right knee condition, and Polanco has had back problems and underwent sports hernia surgeries after the 2011 season.

Manuel would not say when Utley will see his first Grapefruit League action, but it won't be over the weekend.

"I feel like [he will play] when he feels comfortable," Manuel said. "It might be a little while before I play him. He'll do his regular workouts and things like that. I'm in no hurry to play him as long as we can have him ready when the season starts. As long as he feels real good and he feels good about his practice and all and his hitting and stuff."

Manuel said Polanco probably will play Monday against the Yankees at 1:05 p.m. ET, a game which will also be on MLB.TV.

Lee starts winning ways at Phillies' golf tourney

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies signed Cliff Lee to a $120 million contract in December 2010 because they consider him a winner.

He already is on a good roll in 2012.

Lee's group won the team's annual golf tournament Thursday, shooting 16-under par. Jonathan Papelbon, David Herndon, Scott Elarton, bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer and broadcaster Larry Andersen joined Lee in the winning effort.

Lee won the day's long-drive contest and earlier in the week won the Daytona 500 pool.

Worth noting

• Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is back in Florida but is not expected back in camp for another day or two. He is recovering from an infection in his left Achilles tendon.

• Right-hander Justin De Fratus, who is No. 7 among the Phillies' top prospects, has been sidelined because of soreness in his right elbow. He said he could begin his throwing program Monday.

• Expect Phillies starters to pitch two or three innings in their first start as they build arm strength.
