Right-hander Cruz not yet in camp

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Phillies pitchers and catchers officially reported to camp Tuesday, and 36 of the 37 expected players showed up.
Right-hander Juan Cruz, who is a non-roster invitee, is not in camp. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. called it a miscommunication issue.
Amaro said he is uncertain when Cruz will be in camp, but the 34-year-old almost certainly will miss the first official workout Wednesday because he would still need to take his physical, if he arrives.
Cruz went 1-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 43 appearances last season with the Pirates. He has an opt-out clause in his contract that states the Phillies will release him June 1 if he can get a spot on another team's 25-man roster.
Phillies reveal new Minor League training center
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies showed off their new Minor League training facility Tuesday at Carpenter Complex.
They broke ground in April on the recently completed 20,000-square-foot complex, which includes a nearly 5,000-square-foot fitness room, six indoor batting cages and a video center. Four bare-bones batting cages once stood in the spot.
"We had room, we had space, we had square footage," said director of Minor League operations Lee McDaniel. "We wanted to create an environment for players who wanted to come down here in the offseason and work out. We think we've done that. We really think this will enhance our player development from the ground up here in Clearwater."
