Return home should provide boost for Phils

NEW YORK -- The Phillies have spent a majority of their season away from Citizens Bank Park. On Tuesday, the team will return home for a short two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

If the Phillies hope to climb back to the top of the National League East standings, they will have a chance to string together some wins in front of their fans. Over the next 18 games, the Phillies will play 15 of them at home -- the exact number they have played through the season's first 36 games.

Entering Sunday, the Phillies have played the third-fewest home games among the 30 Major League teams. Yet, besides being swept by the Blue Jays in four games this week, Philadelphia has won 11 games on the road.

The Phillies had won 11 of the last 15 games at Citi Field entering Sunday. In the past 14 games, they outscored the Mets, 76-52.

Phillies go pink in honor of Mother's Day

NEW YORK -- In honor of Mother's Day, every position player in the Phillies' lineup used special pink bats during Sunday's game against the Mets.

Wil Nieves and Cody Asche used the bats to produce the Phillies' first run of the game in the second. Nieves doubled to left with two outs and Asche plated him with a sharp double to left.

Chase Utley almost had a home run using his pink bat, but he settled for a triple off the wall in right that scored Jimmy Rollins in the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 4-1 lead.

Many of the pink bats used in the Phillies' 5-4 loss will be auctioned on MLB.com to benefit the fight against breast cancer. The Honorary Bat Girl for Sunday's game was Stefanie Lesnik.

Phils prevent Abreu from producing big hit

NEW YORK -- Two months ago, Bobby Abreu was with the Phillies in Spring Training trying to make the 25-man roster. On Saturday, Abreu came to the plate as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning with a chance to give the Mets the lead.

Fortunately for the Phillies, reliever Mike Adams was able to get Abreu to ground the ball back to the mound to end the inning. Manager Ryne Sandberg said seeing Abreu, who spent nine years with the Phillies, in that situation was fun and a bit odd given the circumstances.

The Phillies released the 40-year-old veteran on March 27.

"We just knew he's a tough at-bat," Sandberg said after the game. "He's patient. I don't know if that ball gets up the middle, but [Adams] made a nice play there."

Worth noting

• The Phillies have performed their best during day games so far this season. The club entered Sunday's game against the Mets with a 8-2 record in afternoon play, the best winning percentage in the NL.

One reason the Phillies have been successful under the sun is because of their offensive production. They are averaging 4.8 runs per the game during the day.
