Sandberg unsuccessful on seventh-inning challenge

Braves' Johnson beats throw at second base on RBI double

ATLANTA -- Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg lost a replay challenge in the seventh inning Saturday when he sought to overturn a safe call at second base on Atlanta third baseman Chris Johnson's RBI double.

Johnson hit a hard ground ball up the middle that ricocheted off the glove of diving second baseman Chase Utley and into the outfield. While Justin Upton scored on the play, Phillies left fielder Domonic Brown charged the ball and threw to Utley, but second-base umpire Jim Wolf ruled that Johnson beat Utley's tag.

After a one-minute, 31-second review, the call on the field stood.

The point would be moot, as Johnson was stranded at second when pitcher Cole Hamels struck out Braves second baseman Tommy La Stella to end the inning.
