The Nationals jumped out to an early six-run lead over the Reds, but couldn't make it hold in the series opener. Ryan Zimmerman, Austin Kearns and Dmitri Young each drove in two runs for the Nationals, who have lost three of their last four games. Jon Rauch took the loss in relief.

Valentin caps late heroics By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com
Javier Valentin played the hero for the Reds on Monday night, hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to cap a comeback win over the Nationals. Starter Bronson Arroyo allowed six runs over two innings, while Jon Coutlangus pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
