Explorers

The Phillies Explorers program is a part of the Learning for Life branch of the Boy Scouts of America. It is an after school program offered to high school girls and boys who are at least 15 years of age, or have completed 8th grade and have an interest in learning about a career in the sports industry.

Over the course of five months, students will have the opportunity to spend an afternoon every other week at Citizens Bank Park learning about careers in the sports industry. Each meeting will feature different employees from our front office who will discuss their job and their career path. Through a hands-on group project, each student will trace the steps that the Phillies front office takes to seamlessly execute what you see at the ballpark.

In 2007-08, over 25 Explorers candidates were exposed to a variety of occupations offered within the Phillies organization. Participants heard from some key members that help contribute to the team on and off the field. From broadcasting to entertainment, player development to community involvements, each Explorer learned how instrumental each aspect is to the Phillies organization.

How the Program Works
  • Each fall, a mailing is sent to area high school students who expressed an interest in the sports industry.
  • Between October and March, students from the Greater Philadelphia region visit Citizens Bank Park and learn from Phillies front office staff about their role within the organization.
  • Explorers take part in interactive sessions that discuss each employee's career path to the Phillies, including ticket sales, broadcasting, fan development, merchandise, marketing/advertising sales, baseball administration, ballpark operations, public relations and community relations.
  • Students apply what they learn into a group project that asks each group to plan their own themed day.
  • At the conclusion of the program, the Phillies Explorers are recognized prior to a Phillies game.
