Phils Shortstop Serving As Honorary Chairman In '09
Jimmy Rollins,
Ryan Madson and
Ruben Amaro, Jr. took part in the YMCA's "Strong Kids Campaign" kickoff event on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Rollins is serving as the Honorary Chairman for the campaign in 2009. The YMCA's goal is to raise $2.1 million during the campaign by the end of March. Amaro has been a longtime board member for the YMCA.
Nine-time Olympic gold medalist
Carl Lewis, a native of nearby Willingboro, NJ, also attended the event to show his support. "The Y has done so much of our community over the years," Lewis said while addressing the crowd. "Tonight is a great start of what will hopefully be a successful campaign."
When Rollins spoke to the audience, he mentioned how the YMCA in his native Oakland related to him. "My parents actually met at a YMCA in Oakland," Rollins explained. "So I have that to be thankful for."
On being the YMCA Honorary Chairman, Rollins said, "I'm honored to represent the Strong Kids campaign for the Philadelphia area YMCA. The Y supports kids and families that need a safe place to play and grow.
"I encourage each of you to make 2009 your own championship year. We have room for another champion in Philly."
Over 200 people attended the event, including YMCA CEO
John Flynn and several board members, volunteers and children.
The Phillie Phanatic also made a special appearance.
