COACHING CAREER

John Mallee joined the Astros as hitting coach on Oct. 19, 2012. Mallee has experience in professional baseball, primarily as a hitting coach in both the Major Leagues and minor leagues. Before joining the Astros he had a stint as the Major League hitting coach for the Florida Marlins from 2010-11. Prior to being named the Marlins big league hitting coach, Mallee spent eight-plus seasons as the organization's minor league hitting coordinator. While at that position, Mallee worked with Astros manager Bo Porter, who was also a coach and manager in the Marlins farm system at the time (2005-06). Before joining the Marlins, Mallee served as the hitting coach in 2001 with Ottawa (AAA) in the Montreal organization. Prior to that, Mallee served for five seasons as a hitting coach in the Milwaukee Brewers organization (1996-2000). He coached with Beloit (A) from 1996-1997 and with Stockton (A) in 1998 before returning to Beloit in 1999. He was promoted to Huntsville (AA) in 2000.

PLAYING CAREER

Mallee spent two seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system as a player after being selected as a shortstop in the 12th round of the 1991 June Draft, playing at Martinsville (R) in 1991 and Spartanburg (A) in 1992.

PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS

Mallee attended Chicago State University and the University of Illinois, majoring in kinesiology. Mallee and his wife, Candy, have two sons, J.D. and Austin.
